A mantel gives a modern and aesthetic look to your living room, plus you can also use it as a shelf to keep your favorite books or decoration pieces. You can get a brick, wood, or stone mantel for installing it on the uneven stone of your living room.
The Steps on How to Install Mantel on Uneven Stone:
You will need some tools and materials to complete the process. Let’s have a look at them.
Tools Required:
- An electric drill
- Tape measurement
- Masonry bit
- Level
- Stud Finder
Materials Required:
- A block of wood or brick or
- Silicone
- Lag bolts
- Vent sleeve
- Chalk
Steps to Follow:
1. Decide Installation Place:
Before installing the mantel for stone fireplace, you need to decide where you will place it. First, with a stud finder, find the studs in the wall so that you can avoid drilling them. Make sure to attach the mantel 50” – 60” above the floor and on the center of the wall.
Measure the width, length, and depth of the mantel and mark the exact measurement on the stonewall with chalk for accurate and straight installation. Next, use a level to ensure that the marked measurements are level.
2. Drill Holes on the Wall for Placement:
Now wear safety goggles and start drilling holes on the stone wall by using an electric drill with a masonry bit. The number of holes that should be drilled depends on the length of the mantel. Each hole should have a 10’’ distance, and they should be lined perfectly.
The masonry bit should be marked with tape so that you know how deep you are drilling. The drilled holes should be 3-4’’ deep.
3. Fill the Holes:
To properly install a floating mantel on the stone fireplace, now insert the lead sleeves that will hold the lag bolts, in the holes of the wall. Next, place the lag bolts inside each sleeve and tighten them firmly, so that they can hold the mantel securely without making it fall.
4. Drill Holes on the Mantel:
After placing the lag bolts, next, you need to prepare your mantel by drilling holes in them. According to the placement of the lag bolts, mark holes on the back of the mantel.
Now drill the marked holes in the mantel with a masonry drill bit. It is recommended to fill the holes with high-temperature silicone for extra security that the bolts will stay in place after inserting them into the holes of the mantel.
5. Place the Mantel:
Now take the mantel and place it by pushing the holes into the lag bolts. Make sure to do this quickly before the silicone in the holes of the mantel dries up.
Next, check the level of the mantel and ensure that it has been placed firmly. Clean it with a dry cloth to remove dust and let it dry for 24 hours. Now decorate the mantel with your preferred showpieces or books.
